Net Zero Project Themes
Theme I: Building Fabric and Performance
Focuses on improving the thermal performance, insulation, airtightness, moisture control, and durability of high-density building fabric, including retrofit of older and historic building types.
Theme II: Heating-Cooling & Energy Storage within Buildings
Led by the University of the West of Scotland. This Theme will design, pilot and assess new heating and energy-storage technologies — both for technical efficiency and socio-technical fit.
Theme III: District / Community Heating-Cooling
Explores large-scale systems serving clusters of buildings or neighbourhoods: shared heat-networks, local cooling, thermal storage, multi-use aim.
Theme IV: Modelling & Data Analysis
Uses advanced modelling, simulation, data analytics, building performance monitoring and digital twins to drive optimisation of high-density building systems.
Theme V: Occupant Needs & Behaviour
Investigates how occupants use and interact with systems, how behaviour influences consumption and performance, and how retrofit/technology solutions can better align with human factors.
Theme VI: EDI, Skills & Training
Focuses on equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in the construction & retrofit sector, and the skills and training required to deliver net-zero at scale in high-density buildings.
Stakeholder Engagement
Engages with industry partners, social housing providers, local authorities, communities and supply‐chains to ensure real-world impact and uptake.
