UWS and CUST China Visit

Professor Des Gibson, director of UWS Institute of Thin Films, Sensors & Imaging (ITFSI), has been awarded an Adjunct Professorship at Changchun University of Science & Technology (CUST), P R China. The award was made by Professor Fu Yuegang, dean of the CUST school of optoelectronic engineering and will strengthen existing UWS/ CUST research and postgraduate teaching links.

Professor Gibson was accompanied by Dr Shigeng Song (UWS ITFSI) as part of the CUST visit to promote the UWS ITFSI masters programme in Advanced Thin Film Technologies and also discuss a new proposed UWS/ CUST undergraduate programme in optoelectronics with physics.

As part of the visit to China Professor Gibson and Dr Song also attended and presented at a gravitational wave (GW) research workshop entitled “Gravitational wave excellence through Alliance Training (GrEAT) Network with China”, held at Beijing Normal University. GrEAT is a joint Science & Technology Facilities Council (STFC) and Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) funded project to promote UK/ China links in GW research and teaching.

ITFSI has a wide range of InnovateUK, STFC, Royal Academy of Engineering, Scottish Enterprise and Horizon 2020 funded projects.
